Griffin Tennis was created in 2014 by Nate Griffin. As a busy Director of Tennis and also an avid player and competitor, Nate found it difficult to commit to practices and matches with other pro’s in the area. The pro’s decided to start an informal league so they would be committed to playing a match every week. Other local 4.5 player’s wanted in on the action and so they decided to put some prize money in it and the informal league quickly grew to 20 players. Since many matches were played at River Strand C.C., other club level players became interested and a Men’s 4.0 level flight was added. Soon other levels were added as well as ladies divisions. If the ladies’ flights didn’t have enough players, the ladies would join in the men’s leagues and form co-ed flights. Soon, the popular Griffin Tennis logo was made (thanks to Nate’s junior and high school friend and teammate, Phil Brauer), and hats and shirts were given to the players. Through Nate’s connections as the local USPTA President, other USPTA pro’s around the state became interested in having the league for their areas, and so flights were added in Gainesville, Fort Myers, Naples, Punta Gorda, and Port Charlotte.
